In my classroom students are expected to take Accelerated Reader(AR) quizzes on books that they check out at the library or books they have at home. Students can access Accelerated Reader Book Find to locate books that they have at home to see if they are a book that has an Accelerated Reader Quiz. Be sure to look at the book level (bl) to see if it is in their range. Use the link below to access AR Book Find.

Field Trips

We will be going on 4 different field trips and having a guest speaker come to us. The cost will include the admission, the bus, and the bus driver. Field Trips are subject to change and information regarding them will be sent home closer to the field trip dates. Below is a list of the scheduled field trips for the 2008-2009 school year and the cost if available.

Childsplay: Students will see the play "Ms. Nelson is Missing" based on the book.

Wildlife Wrold Zoo: Spring 2009 This field trip concludes our trips for the year as we use it to help with our animal reports.

Arizona Academic Standards: Science - Strand 4: Life Science, Concept 1: Characteristics of Organisms PO 1. Identify animal structures that serve different function, Concept 2: Life Cycles

Desert Botanical Gardens: March 11, 2009 This field trip concludes our trips for the year as we learn about the life cycles of desert plants and animals. The trip includes the Butterfly Pavilion where the second graders can explore the various types of butterflies. The trip ties into our unit on the life cycle of the butterfly.

Arizona Academic Standards: Science - Strand 4: Life Science, Concept 2: Life Cycles, PO 1 Describe the life cycles of various insects.

Guest Speakers

Anthony Reynoso: Spring 2008 A roping cowboy who lives here in the valley will visit and perform his roping tricks. We will read a story about him and his family in our reading textbook the same week. The story was written when he was 9 and he is now 22.

Discipline in Mrs. Wyatt's Class

I believe that a positive learning environment is essential for all students in the classroom. I want students to be enthusiastic about their classroom and feel that this is a place where they can succeed. Students will be encouraged in a positive way and be responsible to show self-control in their behavior. My expectation is that all students are capable of behaving appropriately. It is my goal to use positive reinforcement rather than focus so much on the negative consequences for this to be achieved.

6 Pillars of Character

Our classroom has been aligned with 6 Pillars of Character that we will be learning in our classroom. The students will be expected to show all 6 pillars at all times. The pillars are:

1. Trustworthiness

2. Respect

3. Responsibility

4. Fairness

5. Caring

6. Citizenship

We can tie all 6 Pillars of Character into one classroom rule:

We will be caring and live by the Golden Rule. We will treat others with respect and fairness. We will be trustworthy and show responsibility in our learning. We will show good citizenship by doing our share, obeying rules and cooperating with others.

Encouragement

You and I have the important responsibility to encourage and support your child. Our mutual desire is to help your child enjoy the good times and learn from the tough times.

Consequences

Occasionally, students forget classroom expectations, so I will use a behavior system based on clearly established expectations and consequences. This behavior system is based on a three-step process:

1. Verbal Warning, student places their Pillars Book on their desk.

2. Student places pillars book on the teacher's desk and the teacher and student reflect and record the pillar that was not followed.

3. Detention will be served during recess or in a buddy classroom if a student has more than one pillar recorded in a day.

Each Thursday, your child will bring home their pillars book. Any pillars not followed will be recorded in the book. Please sign and have your child return the book to school on Friday. If a child forgets to bring home their pillars book or does not have it signed, responsibility will be recorded. If your child has two or less marks in their pillars book for the week, they will earn a star. If your child has more than two pillar marks they will not be able to participate in any free time earned by the class.

Severity Clause

For a serious disruption such as fighting, destroying property, refusing to work or for severe defiance, a child would be referred directly to the principal. The parent would then be contacted.

Use your head; think before you act; imagine the consequences.

FAIRNESS - HOW TO BE FAIR

Don't blame others for your mistakes.

Scholastic Book Clubs

Our class participates in Scholastic Book Clubs. Each month I will send home Club flyers with a different selection of books offered. You'll find award-winning books, as well as old and new favorites. I recommend them because the books span a wide range of children's reading levels and interests and because they are inexpensive (some books cost less than $1).

It is easy to order. Just look over the flyer with your child, select the books you want, mark them on the order form on the back of the flyer, and return the order form to me with payment in cash or a check payable to Scholastic Book Clubs by the date specified. You may also place your order online.

Here's how to do so:

1. Use the information below to access the Scholastic Book Club Web site.

2. Browse the titles with your child, and place your order with a credit card.

3. I'll receive notice of your order while the credit card payment is sent directly to Scholastic.

4. After I submit the entire class order to Scholastic, your order will be delivered to our classroom and distributed to your child.

The site is private and secure. To access it, go to the Web address below and enter the personalized Class User Name and Password that I set up:

The books will arrive in about two weeks after I send the class order to Scholastic.

The best gift any parent can give a child is the love of good books and the joy and benefits of good reading. Children who read at home, or are read to, have a head start on reading success in school.

Owning your own books is something special! I hope that you will encourage your child to order books this year. Each order helps earn free books and teaching materials for our classroom, however, there is never any obligation to order. I know of no better way to encourage reading than to allow children to choose the books they want to read.

Homework

Homework is assigned on a weekly basis in the form of a packet. Homework packets are sent home on Monday and are due on Friday. Parents should review their child's work and sign the cover page indicating that you have checked your child's work. Homework packets will consist of spelling, vocabulary, and math. Occasionally there is additional homework for special projects we are doing. No homework is assigned over the weekend unless there is a special project to complete or if your child was absent.

Weekly Letter

Meet Mrs. Wyatt

Dear Parents,

Hello! As your child's teacher, I'm looking forward to working with you and your child toward making this year fun, productive, and a happy one for all of us. Students will be encouraged to try lots of new things with a positive attitude and I am expecting many great things from them. Working together we can accomplish this. It's going to be an exciting year.

Sometimes parents like to know a little bit about their child's teacher. My name is Jennifer Wyatt. I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Education where my emphasis was on Early Childhood Education. The focus of my coursework was on the education of children preschool through third grade. This will be my second year here at Las Brisas. I taught second grade at Diamond Canyon School in Anthem prior to coming to Las Brisas. I really enjoyed being closer to home last year and feel privileged to be a part of a fabulous staff at such an amazing school. I will be celebrating my 16th wedding anniversary this fall with my husband Robert. We have two boys, Colby age 11 and Chase age 6. They will be attending Las Brisas this fall. In our spare time we love to watch sporting events, although most of our time is spent watching our sons playing their favorite sports. I am a huge Denver Broncos fan as your children will discover this fall during football season!

Our classroom has many things that help make your child's learning fun and exciting. We have a classroom library with books for every child's interest. This year we will be doing lots of writing and you will see much growth in your child's writing. We will explore the world of science through many discovery and hands on activities. Second grade is going to be great!
